Incheon International Airport

L&B joined a consortium including Heerim and Gensler Architects to submit the winning design competition entry for Terminal 2 at the multi award-winning Incheon International Airport in Korea.

L&B was responsible for planning, including the terminal space program, development and evaluation of terminal master plan concepts, aircraft parking layout planning, and airside interface planning.

Incheon International Airport Company (IIAC) objectives were to maintain ICN’s status as the world’s best airport by retaining key advantages of T1 including short walking distances, high quality amenities and superior level of service. In addition, they sought a design that catered for 45 Million passengers without the need for an underground automated people mover (APM).

L&B played a major role in steering the terminal configuration to meet these objectives including an innovative above ground APM that could be deferred until Stage 2.

L&B also prepared a peak hour analysis of the current airport conditions, then built a three-dimensional simulation of the aircraft parking layout to analyze the functionality of the ramp design.  Videos of the simulation helped explain the benefits of the proposed design.

Following the competition success, L&B were tasked with undertaking comprehensive 3D passenger terminal simulation during the design process. This enabled the design to be validated at key stages and for different demand scenarios so that any potential bottlenecks could be mitigated or efficiency savings gained.
